Tesco’s fresh whole bird range represents an annual volume of 35 million chickens and the trayless packaging solution is now being used on 14 lines across seven production plants. Tesco has benefitted from a 70% reduction in packaging, longer shelf life, significant logistical and merchandising advantages as well as increased customer satisfaction.
Tesco required a packaging solution that also needed to be developed and implemented within a tight timeframe. The company sought a packaging system that enhanced the visual appearance, afforded excellent hermetic sealing, prevented cross contamination and decreased wastages in stores. The highly competitive poultry marketplace also exerted considerable pressure on Tesco to increase shelf life without compromising on the quality of the product for the consumer.
Sealed Air CRYOVAC responded to these demands with the CRYOVAC BDF barrier film, which has helped Tesco increase product shelf life from nine days to eleven days. Customer feedback has also been positive on product appearance, leak-proof performance and absence of odours.
Key benefits from CRYOVAC BDF barrier film for Tesco:
- Label and tray removal enables 70% weight reduction in packaging
- Significant improvement in case fill, allowing six birds per crate as against five in the previous solution
- Shelf life increased from nine days to 11 days
- Versatile printing facility allows effective visual segmentation of the full bird range
