NEW technology in mining offers many benefits to users, especially efficiencies not found in older plant equipment. A new generation coal prep plant operated by Knight Hawk Coal in Illinois, has been singled out as providing exceptional results by North American mining magazine, Coal Age.
According to plant manager Dan Melvin, the plant is "really efficient." He is especially happy with two Schenck Process SCC 1500 centrifuges, then only the third and fourth units installed in the USA.
"They do a good job and they run quiet," said Melvin, who has managed prep plants for most of his career.
Commissioned in August, 2005, the 550-ton per hour plant was designed by Sedgeman USA as a turnkey operation, with the focus on ease of access and maintenance efficiency: good reasons for the installation of the Schenck Process centrifuges.
Schenck Process Australia's Chris Acheson was present during the construction of these centrifuges. He notes that the units were designed with these considerations in mind.
"Bath lubrication, VSD control and resonant vibration technology all contribute to an efficient machine that is easy to maintain and has very low noise levels," he explained.
"Of course, supply of equipment is only part of the story. We backed up our claims of being a total solutions provider with a hands-on approach to the running of the centrifuges before, during and after commissioning," he added.
Using proprietary condition monitoring equipment, Schenck Process engineers in the USA and Australia were able to log into the system on a daily basis to monitor and record temperature and vibration data in real time from the site.
Access to this information has helped Schenck Process engineers to ensure the mechanical integrity of the centrifuges, while assisting Knight Hawk Coal achieve optimal moisture performance for their coal prep site.
Schenck Process centrifuges were released in mid-2004 and have now found excellent acceptance in Australia and abroad.
