Sandvik Coromant has launched the first of a new generation of shoulder mills, the CoroMill 490, which reduces machining costs by up to 25 per cent. CoroMill 490 is a high-precision tool for applications where reduced depths of cut and less final machining are required, as with the near net shape precision forgings and castings used by machine shops for higher productivity. Less, but more precise, work is needed on these castings and forgings.

Features of the CoroMill 490 shoulder mills include:

  • The shoulder mills feature a four edge insert design of CoroMill 490
  • They can produce a finished product in one pass
  • The maximum depth of cut is 5.5 mm; 4 mm is recommended
  • Cutting is light and quiet with low cutting forces on the four edge inserts, achieved through high positive rake and axial angles for smooth entry to the material
  • Low cutting forces arise from innovative insert geometry and new grades in the New Insert Generation of Sandvik Coromant
  • The insert geometry includes new geometry of the parallel land, giving excellent face surfaces and shoulders
  • The inserts have sharp edge lines and produce cuts with smooth, burr-free profiles, making CoroMill 490 the first mill with a true 90 degree square shoulder cut without sharp steps and with no discernable cusp on a smooth surface (cusp height is 0.03mm)
  • CoroMill 490 shoulder mills allow customers to use higher cutting data, starting values and higher productivity in their output
  • CoroMill 490 shoulder mills are available for diameters of 25-80 mm (25–125 mm when completed), with Arbor, Coromant Capto, cylindrical and Weldon shanks; with L, M and H pitch and in metric and inch. The cutter inserts are available in P-geometries and later in M and K
CoroMill 490 shoulder mills offer more productivity gains. Its versatility allows customers to use CoroMill 490 shoulder mills as their standard milling tool, replacing multiple tool stocks and simplifying production control. The result is lower costs for face and shoulder milling. CoroMill 490 shoulder mills can also be used for contouring and edging, without mismatch, and for slot milling.
