Gorbel ceiling mounted work station cranes were installed as overhead cranes at a new truck transmission assembly facility to reduce effort required from workers to move transmissions.
A provider of truck transmissions, rear differentials and steering components, the company was building a new facility for their transmission assembly. With several existing buildings and a variety of applications, the company had experience with multiple overhead lifting solutions.
One of the applications involves a final testing station where fully assembled automatic truck transmissions are given their final physical inspection and a live test prior to shipping. The full assemblies ranging in weight from 50kg to 500kg are dropped off just outside the work cell by a fork truck, where an operator slings the transmissions and brings them to one of two live test stations using the work station crane.
A key problem for the workers of the facility was that the I-Beam crane being used to move the heavy transmissions was wearing them down as it required too much effort.
The company decided to install a Gorbel ceiling mounted work station crane with 2-tonne capacity runways and multiple 500kg capacity aluminium bridges. The system was designed to cover not only the testing cells, but several other work cells on that side of the building.
By installing the 500kg bridges on 2,000kg runways, the bridges can work side-by-side without buffers, giving the workers a very lightweight crane that doesn’t restrict accessibility in any way.
According to the Production Manager, they chose a Gorbel ceiling mounted work station crane for its proven performance and reliability. Since the first installation, the company has upgraded some of their facilities with a few more units of the model.
