Phillip Scott-Smith, a Barminco Mining Contractor, was approached by L. Sullivan to trial and comment on a new product to stabilise hard hats, namely ‘Safe-Mate '. Scott-Smith has continued to use the prototype band ever since.
At one point of time, Scott-Smith was working underground air-legging ground support, while a hole at about 80 degrees was being bored above him; a large rock (approximately 25kg) dislodged itself above him behind the ventilation unit. It landed on the front of his hard hat, smashed and dislodged the cap lamp and his right ear muff. A second rock fell and landed directly on top of his hard hat. Since Scott-Smith was wearing the Safe-Mate, it helped him from further injury.
