Based on information contained in a recent WorkCover safety alert, Safe Environments are alerting their clients and users of their website to the dangers of Tremolite asbestos decorative stone wall tiles. These stone wall tiles are sold as 'Snow White Stackstone' and are imported from China.
Safe Environments advise all stone merchants to confirm whether they have been involved in the importation, selling or fixing of asbestiform materials, including these particular stone wall tiles, because to do so is prohibited under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations Act 1965 and the NSW Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Act 2001.
Importers who suspect that they may have material containing asbestos should contact the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) to arrange for the appropriate tests to be carried out. Customers and retailers who suspect that they may have material that contains asbestos should contact in the first instance the relevant supplier or importer to confirm the absence of asbestiform material or they can also contact Safe Environments for further advice.
Fixers and installers should contact WorkCover if they believe that they have been in contact with material containing asbestiform. Where stone wall tiles, for example, containing asbestiform material have been installed a risk assessment together with suitable control measures should be undertaken. This is done by an Occupational Hygienist in consultation with all stakeholders.
