Global semiconductors leader STMicroelectronics Pty Ltd is partnering with India’s National Innovation Foundation (NIF) to support technological innovation at the grassroots level. The NIF operates under the aegis of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
ST’s involvement will help NIF and other network members convert technological inventions conceived within the ‘Honey Bee’ network of like-minded individuals, innovators, farmers, scholars, academicians, policy makers, entrepreneurs and NGOs, into mainstream business. Honey Bee has initiated a drive called Shodh Yatra (search trip) to gather ideas from all over India, helping to bring grassroots innovation to the mainstream in addition to mobilising ideas of technology students from hundreds of colleges across India through techpedia.in.
While NIF will focus on complete product development, ST will validate and develop electronic solutions for some of the innovative ideas and convert them into value-added technologies that can potentially make a difference to the masses.
Prof Anil Gupta, Founder and Executive Vice Chairperson at NIF explains that a key challenge is to democratise design thinking and innovation to generate interesting electronics applications from the grassroots levels and make them marketable. He comments that the partnership with STMicroelectronics will connect 600 districts of India to the global marketplace, moving backyard inventions beyond the crude prototype stage as well as further enhancing innovations across the country by creating networks of electronic excellence.
According to Vivek Sharma, Regional Vice President, Greater China and South Asia Region - India Operations, Director India Design Centres, STMicroelectronics, the partnership with the National Innovation Foundation is aligned with ST’s community-based efforts to equip local groups with the skills required to succeed in today’s knowledge-based economy.
Such partnerships also provide ST with a great opportunity to support and incubate grassroots innovations with a focus on encouraging future-oriented, trend-spotting electronics designs that will serve the world.
