New wireless transceiver from STMicroelectronics doubles operation lifetime in smart meters and other wireless sensor node applications

STMicroelectronics , an industry leader in smart metering and industrial applications, has recently announced the release of a new ultra low power wireless transceiver for Automatic Meter Infrastructure and other wireless sensor node applications. These applications include:

  • Alarm and security systems
  • Home and building automation; and
  • Industrial monitoring and control.

The ST’s SPIRIT is a high performance device and can cut power budgets by up to fifty per cent in smart meters when compared to existing solutions in the market.    

ST’s SPIRIT1 transceiver manages communications between smart meters in homes and businesses and the neighborhood data concentrator, which relays the information to the utility provider control center.

Transmission capability in frequency ranges below 1 GHz ensures signal propagation through concrete walls and building structures.

When considering battery powered wireless metering applications power consumption is a vital factor. The principle benefit of the SPIRIT1 is that the transceiver delivers an extremely low current consumption and can reduce consumption by fifty per cent. As a result SPIRIT1equipped applications could potentially operate for twice as long as other solutions without replacing the batteries.

STMicroelectronics’ new SPIRIT1 wireless transceiver offers excellent receiver sensitivity and secures error-free data transmission even in harsh environments or challenging logistical conditions.
