Pipeline monitoring, as opposed to other areas of industrial radio telemetry, requires coverage over a long corridor, which makes repeater backbone sites less useful.  

The digital repeater mode, where a telemetry radio modem is configured to repeat messages to further outstations along a line, allows for an all-in-one low cost radio telemetry outstation and repeater. This feature can provide the coverage required without the need for high-priced separate repeater base stations in a network. 

The digital repeater mode coupled with the high-power VHF and UHF capability on the telemetry radio provides long distance communications capable of monitoring pipelines many hundreds of kilometers in length. 

Other features including packet protocol data mode, forward error correction, remote diagnostics give superior data and network reliability performance over conventional telemetry modems making them suitable for the industrial environment. Packet data mode is utilised when radios are required to route protocol packets through the network, alternatively a transparent protocol mode can be used in the case of a smart RTU at the outstations. 

These data radios are specifically designed for industrial applications and has a number of beneficial features for remote monitoring where reliability, security and cost are important factors. UHF and VHF radio modems also provide data security, and high availability when compared to public networks. A private radio network can be used all the time giving options for high-speed updates, and high network traffic with no per-byte transfer costs. The always-on connection also means that the network will be available when needed, and will not suffer in periods of high-traffic as public networks can. The radio packet data mode allows all the common transfer protocols for industrial networks, including Modbus and DNP3 and allows diagnostics transfer live, while the user’s system is running.
