PWO selects NX CAM software from Siemens PLM Software to manufacture components for tomorrow’s cars

Supplier News
The NX CAM software from Siemens PLM Software is being employed by Progress-Werk Oberkirch AG (PWO), a leading supplier to the automotive industry from Baden-Württemberg, Germany for its manufacturing processes.

Siemens PLM Software’s NX software is a leading integrated solution for computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE).

PWO specialises in the design and manufacture of high-tech mechanical components from steel, stainless steel and aluminium for use in vehicle electrical and electronic systems, as well as in safety components in the airbag and the steering mechanism, and as lightweight structures in the body and chassis.

The previous CAM software used by PWO was unable to meet the company's requirements, leading to the selection of Siemens PLM Software’s solutions with a view to increasing productivity and efficiency across its entire product development and manufacturing process.

PWO selected NX CAM software for its state-of-the-art functionality and real-time manufacturing simulation, enabling a reduction in processing times and error rates in the manufacturing process. PWO has been using Siemens PLM Software’s Solid Edge software with synchronous technology as its CAD solution for several years. The combination of compatible CAD and CAM technology now allows PWO to integrate its processes on a single platform to ultimately increase productivity and process efficiency.

Key benefits of NX CAM software:

  • Reduces processing times and errors in simulation
  • Avoids post-processing errors and duplication of production steps, saving time and increasing efficiency
  • Synchronous technology allows components to be imported from a variety of third-party CAD systems for immediate processing
  • Compatible with Solid Edge
  • Consistency allows for improved and faster access to data, increasing productivity and process efficiency
According to Ralf Fischer, who is in charge of all CAx (CAD/CAM/CAE) systems at PWO, the result of the CAM benchmark was apparent rather quickly with the solution’s consistency and the reduced error rate simplifying the work. The CAM software will allow the company to better utilise their manufacturing employees and make optimal use of all their resources.

PWO has plants in Canada, China, Czech Republic, Germany and Mexico. In the coming years, the company plans to align all of the sites through the use of one PLM system.

Urban August, senior vice president and managing director for Germany at Siemens PLM Software adds that it is important for companies to be able to rely on their design software. Using Solid Edge in combination with NX CAM enables PWO to have an integrated process from the tool design to the CNC machine on a single platform, resulting in greater efficiency, speed and safety.
