SICK has released the UM 18 ultrasonic sensor for installations where space is limited and for detecting objects with critical levels of reflectivity.
It has M18 fine-thread housings and is available in standard and high end versions. Both offer an operating scanning distance of between 30mm and 250mm, as well as teach-in and switching threshold programming via the control cable. The UM 18 can be used to detect transparent objects such as PET bottles, check liquid levels in test tubes, or measure filling levels.
The standard model manages has a single switching output, while the high-end model has a second switching output (required for min./max. regulation when detecting levels) in addition to two function LEDs. Internally, an integrated temperature compensation system ensures that the sensor's detection accuracy and reliability remain constant despite any changes in ambient temperature that may take place during operation.
The system is capable of background teach-in. Objects whose surfaces or shapes are critical in terms of their sound reflectivity can be detected with particular reliability. The UM 18 responds to interruption of the taught-in background sound reflections.
