The new possibility of managing up to eight different monitoring cases directly in the S300 Expert safety laser scanner from Sick promises safety and economy to mobile transport systems, mobile workbenches or autonomous service robots for industrial use.
This has been made possible by the sensor’s static and dynamic inputs, via which the particular protective and warning fields can be activated according to the process and situation. Stationary tasks also profit from the performance capability of the S300 Expert.
The S300 Expert electro-sensitive protective equipment is approved for Type 3 according to IEC 61496-3, Performance Level d in compliance with EN/ISO 13849 and SILCL2 in line with EN 62061.
The safety sensor has been designed with a scanning angle of 270° for mobile and stationary monitoring of smaller hazardous areas with protective field radii of maximum 2 m and warning fields with depths of up to 8 metres. With its dimensions of 105 x 102 x 152 mm³, the S300 Expert is a compact safety solution based on a laser scanner that can manage up to eight different monitoring cases directly in the sensor without restriction.
For mobile tasks, this means that the monitoring functions for individual sections of a route can be laid out with even more differentiation. As a result, standstill times can be reduced and drive times optimised in the case of, for example, automated guided vehicles. If all the monitoring cases are not required during initial commissioning, the S300 Expert offers sufficient monitoring reserves for subsequent changes and expansions to drive paths.
If monitoring of both directions of a mobile transport system’s movement is required, two S300 Expert units can be combined to form a single system via the integrated safe device communication interface (the Enhanced Function Interface). Depending on the mounting concept, the 270° scanning angle allows all-round, four-sided vehicle monitoring with only two devices.
Insertion and handling stations, rotary and lifting tables, as well as collection or transfer points are examples of potential stationary uses, in which the S300 Expert protects personnel against accidents whilst working on automatic or semi-automatic machines. As the S300 has the “contour as reference” function, the safety laser scanner is also approved for use as vertical protection.
The scanner is very easy to install (e.g. above an access area to be protected) due to its compactness, its low weight of only about 1.2 kg, and its simple installation via a single cable connection. With the help of up to eight monitoring cases, virtual locks can be created if necessary, in which the vertically scanning device detects objects that are transported through the monitored field and can even distinguish between persons and materials of different sizes.
