The CVS3 Contour Vision Sensor from Sick allows reliable and economical detection of contours and their deviation from a taught-in object pattern.

The most important features of the contour sensor which is based on CMOS technology, are its very short cycle time of just 7 ms, its long operating distance of up to 150 mm, its large detection field with position adjustment to offset positional variations, and its ability to store several detection programs.

Shape and size detection, the checking of printing, or the detection of damage or dirt are typical examples of how this image-processing automation sensor can be used.

In addition to the standard CVS3 with an operating range of between 90 mm and 150 mm, a close-range version for 30 mm to 40 mm is also available.

During inspection of the object, the sensor compares the contour of an actual part with a taught-in correct pattern. A total of 15 different patterns can be stored in the device – either by direct teach-in or downloaded from a PC.

The monitor integrated in the IP67 housing of the CVS3 is also helpful here, because the image that has just been captured is displayed for the user – simplifying alignment or uncovering conditions that are unfavourable for the inspection (so that they can be corrected). In this way, for example, the sensor can assist in designing assembly or packaging processes more efficiently and with fewer potential problems.
