New Digital Encoder 5040 available from SEBA Design is a reprogrammable and output selectable encoder unit using the AS5040 encoder IC from Austria Microsystems.

Using a magnet mounted on the end of the motor shaft with this board mounted behind it, centred on the magnet, the desired encoder wave form is produced by selecting the appropriate dip switches. The maximum speed is 8000 RPM.

Modes:

Select dip switch 6 on for UVW encoding or off for AB-Zero encoding.

Divider:

Use dip switches 1-5 to select the number of pole pairs in UVW encoding or as a divider for AB-Zero encoding.

Max number of pole pairs is 32, max divider is 32. This is set by the dip switches in binary format.

AB-Zero mode with the divider set to 1 will produce 1024 edges. Setting the divider to zero has the same effect as setting it to 1.

Zero position setting:

To set the zero position on a 3P BLDC motor:

  • Set dip switch 6 to UVW mode (on)
  • Set dip switch 1-5 for the appropriate number of pole pairs
  • Fit the zero programming jumper located in the centre of the PCB
  • Apply 5V DC to the Digital Encoder 5040
  • Connect a current across winding W and V with W connected to the positive. Use enough current to lock the rotor in one position
  • Remove the zero programming jumper
  • Disconnect the 5V DC to the Digital Encoder 5040
  • Disconnect the current from the windings.
The Digital Encoder 5040 is now set for UVW encoding with the zero position ready for proper commutation.

This is programmed into flash and can be reprogrammed if the windings change by repeating the process from 1. To set the zero position in AB-Zero mode:

  • Set dip switch to AB-Zero mode (off)
  • Set dip switch 1-5 for the appropriate divider
  • Fit the zero programming jumper located in the centre of the PCB
  • Apply 5V DC to the Digital Encoder 5040
  • Move the system to the desired zero position
  • Remove the zero programming jumper
  • Disconnect the 5V DC to the Digital Encoder 5040.
The Digital Encoder 5040 is now set for AB-Zero encoding with the zero pulse at the programmed rotation. This is programmed into flash and can be reprogrammed if the requirements change by repeating the process from 1.
