Mass handling conveyors appear throughout the can manufacturing process. Cans are transported in many rows on wide conveyor belts, usually with accumulation. 3-piece steel cans or 2-piece aluminium cans are conveyed on long, wide conveyors from ‘body maker’ to decorator applications. Accumulation will occur in most applications.
Plastic modular belts are not suitable for can handling since they will stretch out due to pin and hinge wear, causing problems with sprocket engagement and subsequent replacement of the belt.
Uni SNB M2 and Uni M-SNB M2 conveyor belts use injection moulded pins in nylon material. Nylon has superior wear resistance compared to the PP or POM material commonly used. Additionally, moulded pins have a better roundness tolerance compared to extruded pins, giving increased contact from pin to hinge and longer wear life.
Surfaces of conventional belts are subject to build-up of metal oxides from the bottom of the cans, causing friction to increase.
Uni SNB M2 and M-SNB M2 conveyor belt surfaces have radiused contact points for low contact that scrape the metal oxides off the bottom of the cans and allow them to pass through the belt.
Traditional extruded pins can cause tipping of cans at end transfer points but the Uni M-SNB M2 conveyor belt’s 0.5” pitch can be used with a ¾” diameter nosebar to reduce the gap between conveyors for tighter transfers.
Sprocket vibration typically causes can tipping at transfer points. However, the Uni SNB M2 and M-SNB M2 belts drive on the belt hinge rather than the centre of the link to reduce ‘chordal action’ vibration at the drive sprockets.
