A comprehensive access control solution from Rotech Group Pty Ltd is helping a leading Australian seafood company maintain quality and hygiene within their processes.

De Costi Seafood is extremely particular about their product as well as service, and is focussed on supplying their customers with fresh seafood processed within a highly hygienic environment.

De Costi Seafood sought an access control system that would not only control the entry and exit of employees into their production areas but also confirm that the workers maintained a high level of hygiene. The smart access control solution would regulate the movement of personnel to and from the production areas, as well as ensure the workers washed their hands and used a disinfectant before entering these areas.

Before entering the production area, each worker is required to go through a ‘sanitising room’, wash their hands and walk through an automated foot bath, which then leads to the turnstile provided by Rotech. Made of 316 stainless steel, also known as food grade stainless steel and suitable for food processing and handling, the special turnstile is integrated with an alcohol disinfectant spray that automatically sprays when the staff places their hands underneath. An integrated hand scanner monitors the employee’s clock-in time.

The turnstile will not unlock unless the employees disinfect and scan their hands. When the employees exit the production area they use the hand scanner to clock out.

A separate access control device was provided for management personnel who also needed to access the production area; since scanning their hands would deduct time off their work hours, they required a different access control device. An RFID reader and ID card solution was not suitable for the wet area; Rotech therefore provided silicon wrist bands for the management, which were not only waterproof and easy to wear, but also ensured that time was not deducted from the personnel’s work hours. The wrist bands could also be washed on a regular basis, eliminating even the slightest chances of contamination.

Rotech supplied a waterproof turnstile from the Tristar J series since the facility is cleaned and washed every night. Rotech’s Tristar J series turnstiles offer IP65 protection, making them completely waterproof, and ensuring a longer lifespan.
