Positive clamping for weld fixtures

WELDING today has become a high technology manufacturing process involving robots and other automated systems to improve quality, flexibility and cost of manufacture, particularly in the automotive sector.

This trend has placed significant demands on suppliers of clamps for welding fixtures to provide clamps which are more efficient, compact, and precise.

Tunkers GmbH, represented in Australia by Romheld Australia, has responded to this challenge with its extensive range of pneumatic power clamps.

Tunkers’ power clamps incorporate a flat design with built-in toggle mechanism to provide high clamping forces to ensure workpieces remain clamped even when air pressure is lost.

Also, with integrated detection switches it is possible to fully monitor the clamp condition in automated set-ups. Position detection switches are in cassette format so that changeover can be achieved in just a minute or two.

The toggle mechanism is fully encapsulated within the lightweight aluminium body construction and electrical cables are weld spatter resistant, enabling the clamps to operate continuously in extreme environments.

In addition to the standard range of power clamps, Tunkers also has a Vario-clamp version that allows field setting of the clamp opening angle for fastest possible cycle times. Opening angle is easily set with an allen wrench.

The advanced Alpha series has evolved from the highly successful encapsulated flat clamp that is specified in automotive plants worldwide. Incorporating an integrated pneumatic cylinder to reduce size and weight, the new clamp design also features ‘Curve Mechanics’ to provide a wider full power clamping range and higher clamp forces from the same size of cylinder.

In many fixture applications it is now possible to reduce the number of clamps, obtain superior performance and lower the cost of production.

The entire range starts with mini-clamps in three sizes from 16mm to 25mm bore, compact clamps from 25mm to 40mm bore size and power clamps from 50mm to 80mm bore size.

The compact 25mm unit is also available in a ‘safety clamp’ version, which provides low approach force of less than 10N and full clamping force of 250N at the final 6mm of stroke.

In addition to the power clamp series, Tunkers also offers a range of pneumatic swing clamps in both block and threaded body styles for use in welding fixtures.

Tunkers manufacture a complete range of underbody clamps, retract and expanding pin cylinders, plus clinching, forming and riveting units for use in automated lines.

A modular robot gripper system using the Tunkers clamping technology is also available.

Already proven and in use for many years around Australia, the Tunkers range of power clamps offers innovative high technology at a reasonable price.

Romheld Australia distributes Tunkers products, along with a complete range of components for jig and fixture manufacturers, throughout Australia and New Zealand.
