ROCKWELL Automation has announced that select products from its Allen-Bradley ControlLogix controller family are now certified for use in specialised safety applications up to Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2.
By using standard, off-the-shelf ControlLogix hardware, OEMs and end users can simply and cost-effectively meet worldwide safety requirements.
The select ControlLogix products received the SIL2 certification from the internationally recognised certification centre and testing laboratory TšV Rheinland.
The Safety Integrity Level designates a system's ability to perform functions for risk reduction -- SIL 2 is typically required for applications such as emergency shutdown, fire and gas, spill prevention and other process safety systems.
SIL 2 certification from TšV Rheinland is based on compliance with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 standard -- Functional Safety of Electrical/ Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety-Related Systems.
The certification also meets several other application-independent and -dependent standards from IEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC) and Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.(DIN).
Selected products in the ControlLogix family are able to meet stringent SIL 2 requirements because sophisticated diagnostics and quantifiable high levels of reliability are standard features of ControlLogix processors, I/O modules and communication products.
