Rockwell Automation has introduced Allen Bradley SmartGuard 600 for compact smart safety controller.

Ideal for small stand-alone applications or medium-sized distributed safety solutions, SmartGuard 600 features on-board intelligence, safety I/O and communications ports to deliver a flexible and programmable safety solution with minimal wiring.

The SmartGuard 600 bridges the gap between relay and safety PLC systems. SmartGuard 600 provides a solution that is not only simple to install and easy to program like safety relays but has been engineered to perform complex safety functions and seamlessly link to other intelligent devices on the plant floor.

SmartGuard 600 complements the Allen Bradley MSR series of safety relays and the fully integrated GuardLogix safety controller.

In a single compact package the SmartGuard 600 safety controller includes:

  • 16 safety-rated inputs
  • Eight safety-rated outputs
  • Four pulse test sources
  • A USB port for configuration and
  • A DeviceNet port that supports both standard and CIP safety communication

The built-in DeviceNet port permits SmartGuard 600 to control up to 32 distributed Allen-Bradley Guard I/O safety modules the same distributed safety I/O used in Allen-Bradley GuardLogix systems.

DeviceNet also permits communication of safety system status to standard PLCs and HMIs.

Utilising the built-in USB port, RSNetWorx for DeviceNet is used to configure the DeviceNet network and to program the SmartGuard controller.

This further reduces system cost by eliminating the need for separate programming software and interface cards as well as simplifying maintenance.

Additionally, the SmartGuard 600 controller can perform safety interlocking with other SmartGuard controllers or with the Allen-Bradley GuardLogix and GuardPLC programmable controllers enabling users to easily distribute safety control around the plant floor.

This is ideal for closing high-speed safety loops with safety status provided to the
safety controller via CIP Safety on DeviceNet.
