Radiall has a full range of coaxial electro-mechanical switches with more than 40 000 different part numbers based on a modular concept called RAMSES (Radiall Modular System for Electro-mechanical Switches).
Originally two materials prohibited by RoHS European Directive were contained in this range of switches: The lead contained in solder joints and tinplating. A minimal amount of hexavalent chromium contained in passivated finish (alodine 1200) on the aluminium RF body.
In 2006, Radiall modified its switches to suppress the lead contained in the solder joints and tinplating. The main visual modification at this stage was the colour of the switch solder terminals because they now have a gold plated finish instead of the previous tin-lead plating.
The replacement of the alodine finish treatment has taken more time because there was not any satisfactory solution available on the market. In addition, an exemption was accepted for Hexavalent Chromium passivation in applications such as switch RF bodies, where both corrosion protection and Electromagnetic Interference shielding had to be fulfilled.
Now, Radiall has qualified a new aluminium surface treatment without any hexavalent chromium. The new treatment is almost colourless compared to alodine which was champagne coloured.
Radiall coaxial switches is available from Richardson Electronics.
