In August 2007, the Australian packaged goods industry will see the end of the EANnet catalogue and the launch of the new GS1net data pool.
Apart from more flexibility functionality, the new data pool will now comply with GDSN standards for global data synchronisation.
For over 6 years, EANnet has been providing retailers such as Coles and Metcash with a more sophisticated process for sharing product information.
Suppliers to these retail chains have been able to remove the traditionally error prone process of data alignment using paper based buying forms and excel spreadsheets.
However, the advantages of data synchronisation using data pools such as EANnet and GS1net come at a cost.
The complexity of Product Data Management (PDM) within global data pools such as GS1net has caused companies to invest in a range of items such as system development, GS1net middleware software, change management and also training.
GS1net, although more functionality rich, does require additional information and also adds processes such as a load and publish function.
In August, suppliers that publish their product catalogues to EANnet will need to migrate this information to GS1net.
Although a simple concept, this process requires careful planning and incorporates detailed steps.
Like many companies, they will rely on companies like retail e-v who are specialists in data synchronisation. These organisations have specially developed migration programs that will remove the pain and complexity involved in data migration.
GS1net here in Australia will be a new era for data synchronisation. Finally, Retail E has industry data pools that have interoperability with other data pools all across the globe.
In America, the equivalent to GS1net is 1SYNC. This data pool will provide that companies within that market with similar benefits for data alignment and now global data synchronisation.
Retail E-vironment (retail e-v) provides a range of services to assist companies to manage their product information in EANnet, but also migrate their product catalogues to GS1net.
By combining new technology tools with Business Process Improvement (BPI), suppliers and retailers are now able to link internal business operations such as new product development and product lifecycle management to business process.
