Renishaw, together with Young Engineers, an organisation devoted to encouraging careers in engineering has launched a competition that aims to expose young people to engineering environments.
The Renishaw Engineering Experience will enable six young people to experience a unique week-long insight into engineering-based organisations. Open to all full-time UK students aged 16-18, the competition will run annually for an initial three years, with the first event taking place in June 2013.
A key aim of the competition is to attract young people into engineering careers that will help many UK businesses currently struggling to fill vacancies for skilled engineers. Renishaw has over 100 vacancies in the UK, the majority for engineers with specialist knowledge, some of which have been open for more than a year.
Peter Bowler, Renishaw’s Group Human Resources Manager explains that it is important to not only convince young people of the rewarding careers on offer, but importantly their teachers, families and other influencers. The Renishaw Engineering Experience promises to be an inspiring and potentially life changing experience for six lucky students.
The Renishaw Engineering Experience is a fully subsidised, 5-day package of activities, which aims to encourage a career in engineering by enabling six lucky winners to get close to successful engineering-led organisations and heritage sites, meet the people behind their success, and see the products that impact daily lives. It will culminate in a visit to Renishaw’s award-winning state-of-the-art factory in Gloucestershire.
Rod Edwards, Chief Executive of Young Engineers adds that engineers are involved in cutting edge technology in amazingly diverse products and have a major role in tackling global challenges including climate change, health and energy security. With the rising demand for engineers in the UK and a shortage of engineers forecast for many years, there has arguably never been a better time to consider a career in engineering.
Entry is open until 31 March 2013, with selection and interviews taking place in April. Full details can be found on the Young Engineers website.
