Similar to top running bridge cranes in fundamental design, underslung cranes have the end trucks ride on the bottom flange of the runway beam rather than on top such as in top running overhead cranes.
The runway beam in underslung overhead bridge cranes is often suspended from the existing roof structure, which eliminates the need for support columns to support the runway. This can be advantageous in situations where floor space and the need to reduce obstructions are major issues in the factory or warehouse.
Underslung cranes may even be appropriate with sloped ceilings or multiple crane systems.
Key features of underslung overhead bridge cranes:
- Capacities up to 5 tonnes
- Increased hook height
- Utilises existing roof structure
