Maxim Integrated Products, represented by RS Components Pty Ltd, has introduced MAX5556, a low-cost, 24-bit, I2S-compatible stereo DAC. The MAX5556 sigma-delta DAC has less than -87dB of total harmonic distortion plus noise, and more than 87dB of dynamic range.

The MAX5556 integrates interpolation, deemphasis, analog output filters, click-and-pop-free power-up and power-down, and line level outputs that can swing 3.5Vp-p with a 10 kilohm load. The MAX5556 can be used for digital audio applications.

The MAX5556 includes automatic clock divisor detection (MCLK/LRCK) and operates with a sampling frequency of between 2kHz and 50kHz from an MCLK of up to 25MHz. The output is muted if the clock signal is lost, and then returns to normal operation without glitches when the clock signal is restored.

The MAX5556 operates from a single +5V supply and has a 16-bit to 24-bit I2S-compatible serial interface. The MAX5556 device is available in a narrow, 8-pin SO package.
