Quality Electrics Rockdale have noticed that many residential owners are replacing their old light fittings with new modern halogen fittings. These are not to be confused with the low voltage halogen spot lights. The modern halogen fittings operate from a 240V switch supply. The users are unaware that manufacturers supply fibreglass shrouding within the package to insert over the feeding switch line, earth and neutral cables.
Depending on the manufacturer, users may not even have the correct shrouding or innocently throw it away when opening up the box. The problem arises when the 100W halogen is left on for a long periods of time. It will generate enormous heat which in a short time bakes the single insulated PVC cables. This can lead to short circuits, fire within the home or worse case a fatal electrocution.
Quality Electrics suggest the following safety measures for new halogen fittings:
- Ask for advice about the light fittings and buy from a fully qualified electrician and not just a store attendant who simply wants to sell you a light
- Have the lighting fitted by an electrician
- Check the box before leaving the store for the correct amount of fibreglass shrouding to insert over the feeder cables
- Install a dimmer switch to reduce the wattage through dimming, as this could assist in the longevity of the cables
