Black Pearl, the biggest superyacht ever built by Diverse Projects of Auckland, New Zealand, fired up its twin 600 hp engines for the first time on January 14, allowing its owner’s connections to judge how well acoustic insulation from Pyrotek Noise Control performs.

“Purred like a kitten,” is how Lars Bjorklund, one of the co-founders and directors of Diverse Projects, described the sound of the twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT diesels, even down in the engine room at cruise speed, on initial sea trials following the late December launching.

The Black Pearl project cements Pyrotek Noise Control's reputation in the market, not only for acoustic insulation but also fire proofing products rated to A60.

According to Bjorklund's partner, John Vitali, the passage-maker is the largest yacht they have built to date and Pyrotek Noise Control's products have more than fulfilled the requirements of the project.

“They have always been very easy to deal with and very forthcoming with information and the goods and we’ve found them competitive.” says Vitali.

Pyrotek became involved in the Black Pearl project when Diverse Projects studied the vibration and sound transmission through the boat in the early design stages. Recommendations came from a number of parties that Pyrotek Noise Control products would best achieve the noise and vibration requirements of the study.

Pyrotek Noise Control is renowned for manufacturing technically advanced vibration, noise control and fire protection materials in the world.

Bradley Scott of Pyrotek Noise Control asserts that the company's products are all fully tested and certified to meet marine classifications, and have a proven history in the market.

According to Scott, the acoustic insulation products Pyrotek Noise Control supplied to the vessel were Quadzero, Soundpaint SP150, Soundamp DC30, Sylomer and Centek Marine Mufflers.

As for fire protection, the engine room of the vessel needed to be rated A60 to meet classifications, which meant the engine room had to be able to burn for one hour without fire getting out.

These needs were achieved by the use of Pyrotek Noise Control's fireproofing materials; Fyrewrap and Isover Ultimate.
