The Government's Satellite Phone Subsidy Scheme is available to residents of all states and territories in Australia. Eligible consumers are people who live, work or operate a business in an area not served by the terrestrial GSM networks. This includes:
- Private individuals
- Small businesses
- Community groups
- Not-for-profit organisations
- Indigenous corporations
- Volunteer emergency services
A maximum of one subsidy per person or two subsidies per organisation or business is permissible. Subscribers may be eligible for a subsidy of up to 85 per cent of the cost of the phone depending on whether they are located inside or outside of cellular coverage.
The subsidy only applies to satellite mobile phones that have been purchased through a registered dealer. The subsidy is then paid to the dealer who deducts it from the retail price of the phone.
