Safety system approved to IEC 61508 SIL 3

Supplier News

PILZ Automation Technology reports that the majority of its PSS programmable safety system and modules used with a SafetyBUS p safety fieldbus network have received approval for applications up to SIL (safety integrity level) 3 in accordance with the requirements of IEC 61508.

This means that the combination of a PSS and SafetyBUS p fieldbus can be used for safety-relevant control in applications up to Category 4 of EN 954-1 or SIL 3 in accordance with IEC 61508.

The increasing globalisation of markets for machinery and equipment has had a significant impact on safety-related standards.

The underlying principle of IEC 61508 is that a uniform international safety standard must be adhered to, regardless of the geographical region or application area, but without the imposition of prescriptive guidelines or standards. This approach has led to an international acceptance of electronic products and appropriate technologies that is spreading across a broad range of industries.

A second important aspect of IEC 61508 is that it requires safety to be taken into account for the whole lifecycle of the machinery, equipment or plant.

Now that the PSS and SafetyBUS p communications modules have been approved in line with the requirements of IEC 61508, the SafetyBUS p protocol is better placed for adoption globally. Already more than 95,000 fieldbus nodes have been installed worldwide.
