FM radio for mobile devices

ROYAL Philips Electronics has an FM radio solution for mobile devices and an FM and radio data system (FM+RDS). The external component count has been reduced in the FM and FM+RDS products.

The size of the TEA5761 FM radio has been reduced from 150mm2 to a 50mm2 PCB area. The TEA5764 FM with integrated RDS demodulator and decoder covers a total PCB area of 70mm2. The two versions have wafer level chips-scale packaging. The FM radio and FM+RDS are fully pin-compatible.

15% of mobile phones sold worldwide have FM radio. The integration of RDS will enable users to view the station name, scan for a particular type of program and ensure that the receiver always tunes to the strongest signal available. The technology also offers benefits for telecom operators by increasing average revenue per user (APRU).

The small size of the components simplifies the design process and makes space available for other features.
