A large advanced water treatment plant (AWTP) built by Ovivo Water in Brisbane is saving the Australian state of Queensland millions of litres of water each day.
The recently completed facility was built for Inghams Enterprises at their Murarrie Processing Plant in Brisbane. Inghams is one of the largest producers of meat chickens and turkeys in Australia.
The advanced water treatment plant currently treats the equivalent of two Olympic-size swimming pools of process water per day. At its full potential, it will treat the equivalent of three swimming pools.
The AWTP is designed to transform more than 70 per cent of all process water into drinking water of an internationally recognised and approved quality.
Though not used for drinking, the treated water is combined with town water to meet the facility’s increasing water demands.
This translates into savings of 3.15 million litres of water each day in Brisbane by the time the plant reaches full capacity in 2011, which will significantly ease the state’s ongoing water shortage problems.
Project and process engineer for the job, Peter Fraser says that the AWTP is a one-of-a-kind project and currently saves Brisbane around 2.1 million litres of water a day running at well below its design capacity.
The AWTP will guarantee Inghams water supply at almost the same cost as using town water. Securing a guaranteed water supply will enable the company to expand its processing facilities without relocating or having to purchase water from private sources.
The success of the Brisbane AWTP has encouraged Inghams to approve the construction of a second advanced water treatment facility in the Australian state of Victoria.
Highlights of the AWTP
