Seasonal surge on data recovery experienced by Ontrack Data Recovery

According to Ontrack Data Recovery , the world leader in data recovery, the new calendar year began with a significant spike in data loss incidents due to seasonal weather and a lack of sufficient backups.

According to Ontrack Data Recovery, at the start of the year, it typically sees a lot of hardware failure as a result of high temperatures.

With many organisations closing down over the break or maintaining only a minimal staff presence, users are unaware of a problem until they return from holidays.

The first thing Ontrack Data Recovery tells those affected by data loss, is to remain hopeful, as chances for successful recovery are promising if certain precautionary steps are taken.

A backup system serves no useful purpose in a crisis if the data preserved on it is not current. Backups need to be tested regularly to ensure they are less likely to encounter problems.

Furthermore, too often data loss results in overloading staff to recreate the lost data, downgraded revenue forecasts, loss of customer confidence and in extreme cases, potential liability. It is crucial that other fallback solutions exist.

According to Ontrack Data Recovery, in many cases, successful recovery of data can be achieved in less time than rebuilding the lost data from scratch. This method of recovery results in less downtime and fewer financial headaches.

In addition to an existing backup plan, maintaining a relationship with a data recovery company is another crucial factor to protect any organisation against a data loss catastrophe.

To help businesses prepare for seasonal weather, Ontrack Data Recovery offers these additional tips to assist businesses in protecting against damage from severe temperatures or storms and lessen the chances of data loss if damage occurs:

Ensure computers and servers are kept in a cool, dry area to minimise the risks of drive failure from overheating.

Do not attempt to power up visibly damaged devices.

Check protection devices regularly: At least once a year user should inspect power protection devices to make sure that they are functioning properly. Many good ones will have a signalling light to tell the user when they are protecting the equipment properly.

Use dedicated circuits, if possible: Putting the computer on its own power circuit, so it is not sharing power with air conditioner, greatly improves the power quality and insulates the PC from power sags when these devices are turned on.

Businesses with network servers should invest in some form of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which uses batteries to keep servers running during power outages.

Lightning can be a significant problem during seasonal storms. Make sure to install a surge protector between the power source and the computer’s power cable to get an actual surge protector, not a power strip.
