By 2004, assuming the sun continues to shine, Graham Willis of Menigie, South Australia will have his substantial water pumping costs at virtually zero.
He will not be obliged to pay for mains water at something in excess of the current price and he will not be required to constantly pay for expensive repair costs to three ancient windmills.
The windmills also required a constant supply of wind, a commodity that is frequently in short supply during hot South Australian days.
At times when water is most needed, wind droughts are both frequent and extended. Thus, when cattle, sheep and home needed copious amounts of water the Willis windmills would stand silent and powerless, cutting off all flow from the bore.
Enter Richard Bentley, of Wesfarmer, with a solution -- a new solar powered Mono Pumps’ installation that would deliver ten times the volume of water provided by the three windmills.

Each solar pumping unit involves a four-panel solar array, a controller (or maximum power point tracker), a submersible brushless dc motor and a positive displacement pump.
The solar modules are manufactured from high efficiency monocrystalline silicon cells, designed for maximum reliability and minimum maintenance. They are highly resistant to water, abrasion, impact and other environmental factors.
The solar cells are mounted on a tracking array, which tracks the sun’s path throughout the day. An SMC/MPPT solar controller tracks and follows the sun’s position while monitoring power output from its solar array and controlling voltage.
