GE Intelligent Platforms announces a new rugged range of single board computers featuring 4th generation Intel Core i7 architecture.
With the introduction of the XVR16 6U VME rugged single board computer, GE has increased the number of products it offers based on the quad-core 4th generation Intel Core i7 architecture (Haswell). The improved capabilities of the XVR16 will allow it to not only address existing command/control applications, but also be deployed in more demanding High Performance Embedded Computing (HPEC) signal processing applications such as ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance), sonar and radar.
Designed in line with GE’s commitment to maximising the value of customer investments by continuously providing a frequent, straightforward, cost-effective upgrade/technology insertion path, the XVR16 6U VME rugged single board computer offers existing users of the XVR14 and XVR15 significantly more processing power, graphics performance, functionality and I/O capability. All these capabilities come within the same power envelope as the predecessor models, enabling simple ‘drop-in’ replacement.
Taking advantage of the latest processors from Intel, XVR16 addresses issues related to highly complex customer applications and SWaP by providing significantly more capability but without any penalty in terms of size, weight, power consumption or heat dissipation.
The 4th generation Intel Core i7 architecture brings with it numerous improvements when compared with predecessor generations. These include Intel Advance Vector Extensions (Intel AVX 2.0) enhancements that provide a significant performance improvement in floating-point-intensive computations - a key part of digital signal and image processing applications. Media and graphics performance is also greatly enhanced, capable of delivering 2D/3D graphics with high quality playback enabling a compelling visual experience. Improved security comes in the form of Intel AES New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) enhancements, which use hardware to accelerate data encryption and decryption.
Key features of the XVR16 include up to 16GBytes of memory; 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor’s support of PCI Express Gen3 technology and USB3.0; even greater bandwidth for on-board and off-board connectivity; support for two onboard PMC/XMC expansion sites; and five build versions from air-cooled to fully rugged, providing cost-effective solutions in environments from benign to extremely harsh.
