Figures released by the Royal Life saving Society doesn’t impart confidence for the summer season ahead. There were 302 drowning deaths in 2008-9, 41 more than 2007-8. RLSS Chief Executive Rob Bradley said the alarming statics were a wake up call to all Australians about the need for water safety.
A combination of lax councils and equally irresponsible pool owners contributed these distressing statistics. Only a fraction of the 300,000 backyard pools were ever inspected and of those checked most failed basic safety. An important link in the preservation of life is knowing CPR.
