Manufacturing Software completed another MRP software implementation at leading bus manufacturer Custom Coaches to meet the latter’s growing needs.
Custom Coaches is Manufacturing Software’s largest client in Australia with more than 500 employees operating over two shifts in three states. The company builds bus bodies mostly for the state government as well as for private operators.
Custom Coaches and Manufacturing Software first became associated in June 1998 when five separate MRP systems were installed to cover the operations of their various plants across Australia.
Custom Coaches was one of the first in Australia to base its planning and manufacturing system on a manufacturing resource planning software platform. Not only is the company active proof of the competitive and performance gains enabled by the technology, it has also met the challenge to maintain local employee levels against the pressures of global competition.
According to National Supplies Manager Mr Bill May, the company’s unique requirements helped mature and shape the product by challenging the MRP system’s design engineers to meet the bus builder’s expanding demands.
Manufacturing Software implemented the touchscreen software, ManuSoft for Custom Coaches. The company is now releasing an online MRP product, ManuDyn for instant rollout at an international level.
Mr May describes the bus manufacturing company as a good testing and development scenario for MRP with the engineers at Manufacturing Software meeting every challenge set by Custom Coaches by delivering major enhancements synchronised across three different sites.
Custom Coaches is constantly looking to enhance and change the system to increase productivity, deliver better products, and ease the life of the staff.
Job retention is a major gain for the company from the MRP system, which provides accurate information that facilitates comparisons to all relative Asian job markets, allowing the company to realise their competitiveness in the market, in turn enabling them to keep jobs in-house rather than outsource to cheaper labour markets.
The first system, a DOS version implemented at Custom Coaches was designed to import/export jobs and transfer goods between the various manufacturing and assembly divisions. This was replaced in 2000 by the Windows version.
With operations quadrupling by 2005/2006, the engineers developed a ‘Divisional’ version of the system, which amalgamated the separate MRP systems in each division at a totally different location into a single set on a server located in Sydney. When the file sizes became too large, an SQL version of the system was developed and installed in 2010.
Custom Coaches has been a partial driving force and catalyst leading to capability expansion and improvements in Manufacturing Software’s MRP systems over the years, with much of this development experience ending up in the ManuDyn internet-based product.
The ManuSoft MRP system at Custom Coaches is now being used by 80 users across three sites nationally.
