Lovells Springs in Carrington is making the biggest spring the company has ever made in the 75 years and more than most likely, the biggest spring ever made in Australia.
From a 12 metre length of OneSteel bar, 54 mm in diameter, Lovells is using its years of know how to make a spring for a Queensland Rail loco.
“The boys on the factory floor are the real difference in delivery,” said General Manager John Wayland.
The spring is one of a nest that will make up the suspension of what QR designate a 3700 class loco which is being refurbished to work in the coal haulage business in the Bowen Basin. Here, all the fleet of locos are being refurbished with bigger power plants to haul coal to the coast. This means that the loco has to carry a bigger load.
“The spring has been a real challenge to us at Lovells, but because we have held on to our great team at the factory, we have been able to deliver,” Mr Wayland said.
