LOGITECH has released the MediaPlay cordless mouse which also serves as a remote control that can control digital media on a PC. It has an extended wireless range of more than 3m.
It can be held comfortably as a computer mouse with a hand over the top or held as a remote in the palm of the hand. When used as a remote, the scroll wheel serves as the centre for navigation, allowing use of the thumb for scrolling through menus and directories of music, videos and pictures.
It has ten integrated, backlit media buttons, including play, pause, forward, back and volume. This allows easy control of media players such as Musicmatch, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and others. These buttons illuminate when pressed, making them easy to see in most lighting conditions. The mouse has a soft rubber ridge, a contoured base and a subtle hourglass shape.
A media button launches the MediaLife software, a full-screen interface that brings together all the music, pictures and video on the PC. It also provides direct access to and control of the Musicmatch internet radio service. The media button is located just beneath the scroll wheel and can be set up to launch any other media player applications.
Other features include universal forward and back thumb controls for application-specific page navigation, tilt wheel plus zoom scrolling and a six-month battery life. The scroll wheel allows easy and accurate scrolling in three dimensions, up and down, in and out, and side to side. The mouse uses optical technology based on invisible light, saving power and eliminating distraction when used as a remote. It also includes an on-off switch to extend battery life.
It comes with a receiver the size of a car key. The receiver plugs into a USB port and the mouse works instantly. There is no connection process because the receiver is paired with its companion mouse at the factory. This system reduces clutter and works well with both desktops and laptops.
