Selecting the right conveyor belt for your manufacturing or food processing application

When considering which conveyor belt type is best for a given manufacturing or food processing line it is important to gather as much information as possible regarding the requirements of the system before making a decision. Consideration should be given to all the known features of the process and application that will have any effect on the belt performance.

The requirement for circulation for heating, cooling, washing and drying mediums through the fabric plays a role in correct belt selection. Attention should also be paid to the diameter of head, tail and other rollers as these determine the efficiency of the drive and to a degree the service life of the belt. Finally, the type and location of the drive (as separate from the chain drive) can also affect the type of belt chosen.

Spiral Wire

Locker Group's range of spiral wire belts are used in a variety of industries from food processing to heat treatment. Spiral systems offer several advantages, including decreased dwell times, a smaller footprint and increased production capacity.

These belts can be manufactured from a range of materials, from mild or stainless steel through to high temperature alloys live Inconel 601, and are available in different wire diameters (from 0.71 to 8.0mm) and widths to suit a given application.

For easy cleaning and reduced wear on belts and other conveyor system components, spiral wire systems can be supplied in sizes ranging up to 1,400 metres long in a compact multi tier tower. Employing a system of this size also typically reduces down time and replacement costs.

Plastic Hybrid

Combining the versatility of plastic with the strength of stainless steel, hybrid belts are ideal for a wide variety of applications and are particularly well suited for use in cooler temperature environments including in freezer applications. Their unique design means they do not encounter spotting issues caused by oily products, ensuring their wide use in seafood processing equipment.

Plastic hybrid belts are suitable for light products, and to further extend their flexibility attachments such as side plate and cross flights combined with standard drive chains can be incorporated.


Lo Tension

Lo Tension belts are designed to eliminate the need to transfer goods between belts. They can operate in an extended range of temperatures, from cryogenic freezers through to moderate temperature ovens.

Easy to clean, Lo Tension belts have a compact foot print and a simple single drive.


Rolmat

Rolmat conveyor belts provide a flat conveying surface with maximum open area for free air and/or water flow. This allows for easy cleaning and airflow for product cooling, making them ideal for washing, cooling and baking applications.

They are designed to overcome tracking errors and belt/pulley slip to minimise wear and tear, and are constructed with precision formed wire ribbon joined by straight connecting rods. This delivers a high strength to weight ratio for increased capacity. Available in standard or heavy duty ribbons, Rolmat belts can be constructed from a variety of materials in any length or width.


Unigrid / Spiragrid

Capable of changing direction and travelling along different planes, Unigrid / Spiragrid belts can be used to replace several separate conventional units, each with their own drive and transfer units. This results in a highly versatile system that delivers reduced initial installation and annual running costs.

The unique construction of these belts means they can be used in many applications including freezing, heating, drying, cooking and transportation. Large open areas in both belts allow for easy cleaning and airflow for product cooling, while the optional overlay available for Spiragrid adds additional support where necessary.


Flex grid

Flex grid conveyor belts are sprocket driven, using two sprockets on each head and tail shaft. They are constructed with parallel wires in a variety of steel grades, wire sizes and belt widths, and are ideal for lightweight products in both straight line and turn conveyor applications

Flex grid systems use slider supports at or near both edges of the belt on the load and return passes rather than supports under the full width of the belt.


Uniflex

Locker Group notes that Uniflex is a highly flexible belt suited for unlimited applications in:

  • drying
  • washing
  • coating
  • cooking
  • cooling; and
  • inspection, among other applications.

These conveyor belts are comprised of interlocking strands of high tensile wire, and ensure perfect tracking as they are positively driven by stainless steel or nylon sprockets within the wire mesh.

Widely used in confectionary and snack foods industries, the belts vary in number of spaces across the width, pitch and wire diameter and are made to an overall width as requested.
