One of the main costs in materials handling is damage. Every time a product is handled the risk is increased. One application where this is a common problem is in the smaller warehouse that requires a counterbalance unit to unload trucks outside their warehouse and a reach truck to place the product into narrow aisle racking.
The risk of damage is increased and the cost of having two units to carry out one operation. The extra handling time should be included and true cost of this type of operation has to be worked out.
