LACIE Australia has unveiled a new range of portable USB 2.0 desktop hard drives that fuse speed and convenience in an attractive aluminium design.
Available in capacities of up to 200GB, the drives are ideally suited for storage "hungry" applications, such as digital audio or video.
With data transfer at a peak speed of 480Mbps, the LaCie d2 drives deliver a sustained transfer rate of up to 28MB/s, compared with 16MB/s for most traditional USB 2.0 disks.
LaCie achieved this rate by combining newly-developed Hi-Speed USB 2.0 to IDE bridges with high-performance 7200rpm ATA100 disks.
Scottish creator Neil Poulton designed the LaCie d2 model with aluminium and ZAMAC alloys which not only enhance appearance but also increase heat dissipation and prolong drive performance.
Without the necessity of cooling fans, LaCie d2 hard drives show a noise reduction of up to 50 per cent, according to tests.
The LaCie 80GB, 120GB and 200GB desktop portable drives offer instant extra storage capacity, without the need to pry open the machine for installation as with internal disks.
Pre-formatted, the drives can be instantly hot-plugged while the computer is running. LaCie d2 hard drives can easily move between computers for sharing large amounts of cross-platform data while avoiding network clogging.
