Ferret.com.au's sister publication Logistics & Materials Handling held its annual Mercury Awards recently in Sydney, where Konecranes
received the Materials Handling Solution Award for a unique lifting solution it supplied to defence prime contractor Austal.
A leading industry event, the Mercury Awards were established to "celebrate the achievements of industry leaders in their drive to achieve 'best practice', excellence and innovation in Australia’s logistics, supply chain and materials handling industry."
Konecranes partnered with Austal to develop a lifting solution for large ship sections under construction. 16 overhead hoists working simultaneously are typically used for this application, to lift and move assembled ship sections before positioning into the main structure.
Previously, each of the hoists required its own operator, meaning 16 were needed to shift ship sections, so Austal approached Konecranes to develop a more efficient working method.
Konecranes provided a solution that utilises multiple remote controls, allowing a single operator to control the 16 designated hoists, with the capacity to control up to 20 at a time.
