A new Kennards hire division specialising in equipment for the professional upkeep of golf courses, bowling greens and sporting fields has begun operating in Sydney.
Kennards Groundcare Hire provides a service which, up till now, has not been generally available.
Many sporting clubs and councils have indicated they would prefer to hire at least some of their specialist grounds equipment, rather than invest capital in buying it.
Equipment initially available from Kennards Groundcare Hire includes tractor-mounted aeration and maintenance equipment, various grass cutting machines, compact tractors, utility vehicles and topdressing equipment.
"We will continue to expand our fleet based on customer requirements and demand," said the manager for Kennards Groundcare Hire, Steve Joseph,.
"At this stage, the new division, which is based at Girraween in western Sydney, can deliver machinery anywhere in Sydney or the ACT."
Operations will eventually be expanded into other parts of Australia.
Ryde City Council was one of the first councils to take advantage of the new division, hiring a tractor-towed Aera-vator to aerate sporting fields in preparation for spring.
"Hiring gives us the chance to use a piece of machinery that is better than what we have," said sporting fields maintenance co-ordinator, Richie Griffiths.
"In the long term, we may buy one, so hiring also gives us the chance to trial it.
"At present, it is very difficult to hire specialist ground-keeping equipment.”
"You generally have to go through green-keeping firms and then you may find that you have to hire a machine with an operator,” said Mr Griffiths.
"A general hire company, such as Kennards, is more customer-focused, which suits our needs.
"We deal with Kennards for other equipment, so their expansion into this area is handy for us."
