Australian production companies have been keeping their inventory of Vari-Lites busy this summer on a wide variety of concerts and theatrical events.
Elton John's The Captain & The Kid Tour, designed by Kevin Stick Bye and Benny Kirkham utilised 40 x VL3000 spots, 12 x VL2000 wash, 12 x VL1000 spot and 18 x VL6C spot in a stunning visual display.
Around the same time Kille Knobel, Pearl Jam's talented lighting designer, was touring with 20 x VL5 Arc wash and 16 x VL2402 wash.
Bad boy Robbie Williams wowed the crowds with a dramatic show with lighting designed by Al Gurdon featuring 42 x VL3000 spots, 28 x VL5 Arc wash and 14 x VL2000 wash.
Roger Waters toured 30 x VL3000 spot and 15 x VL2000 wash in a rig designed by Mark Brickman.
Il Divo's lighting designer Mark Cunniffe requested VL2500s for their Australian tour as did those other erstwhile warblers The Ten Tenors with lighting by Peter Kramer.
For the variety of concert events held in Sydney's Domain, lighting designer Gavan Swift specified VL2000
As usual Vari-lites are common in the theatre world with Phil Lethlean using VL2000 wash and VL1000 spot fixtures on Titanic the Musical.
The new production of Miss Saigon, due to open this month in Melbourne with Richard Pacholski as associate lighting designer, uses 15 x VL3000 Q spot, 4 x VL3000 Q wash, 9 x VL2000 spot, 17 x VL2000 wash and 6 x VL500.
The Phantom of the Opera relit tour of Asia, redesigned by Andrew Bridge with Michael Odam as Associate Lighting Designer, makes use of 25 x VL5 and 37 x VL1000.
Nick Schlieper used VL3500 spots on Priscilla Queen of the Desert commenting; "I chose the VL3500's mainly for their light level and they have an extraordinary zoom range too. They do go enormously big which is why I hung three of them on the circle front because you can do an entire cloth, and then some, with just one lamp and still get an impressive light level out of them."
Vari-Lites have also been livening up the dance scene with Jamie Centofanti using VL3000 spots in the party-hard Boiler Room at the Big Day Out. Meanwhile Azure Opening Party for the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras had VL2500 and VL500 in the rig operated by Nathan Barnier. VL3000s made their presence known at the actual Mardi Gras party designed by Richard Neville.
The mega-show Walking With Dinosaurs, lit by John Rayment, used VL3000s with John saying; "The VL3000 has a lovely light output and is flexible, reliable and consistent."
The 15th annual Asian Games Opening and Closing ceremonies in Doha, Qatar, featured over thirty VL3000 spots in a lavish production designed by Fabrice Kebour and Andrew Doig.
The Youth Olympics Opening Ceremony, designed by Josh Moffat, was a success with VL2500 and VL500s. Melbourne's Carols By Candlelight designed by Rohan Thornton utilised 24 x VL3000 spot and 8 x VL2000 wash.
Scouts Australian Jamboree 2007 did not miss out with 8 x VL2416 with the show designed by Liz Beedle.
Also designed by Rohan was the AFI Awards lit by 32 x VL5 and 24 x VL2416 as well as the Allan Border Medal award show had 30 x VL5.
