Sydney Opera House has purchased twelve Jands Vari-lite VL1000 incandescent fixtures.
“We chose the VL1000 because of their acceptance with theatrical designers,” stated Phil Dunesky, Technical Operations Manager at the Opera House.
“There were several features that we favoured including the incandescent lamp, the onboard dimmer that dims the same as our conventional fixtures, the framing shutters, the Vari-lite colour mixing and their silent operation. Of course, we also like their price!”
Phil commented that the plan is to use the VL1000 fixtures extensively in The Studio venue.
“The Studio is perfect for the VL1000 as it is a short-throw venue,” he explained. “We’ll be using them for the jazz sessions that are coming up soon.”
Despite being purchased for the Opera House’s smaller venues, the first performance by the VL1000’s was in the Concert Hall where David Ferguson used them for a Taiwanese corporate show.
”I had the twelve VL1000’s in a row with half of them utilising the four-blade shutter system and the other half the irises,” explained David. “The gobos were very nice and I found they were easy to hook up and patch into the console.”
