Jands  completed a turnkey project for the Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre involving the fit-out of lighting and sound systems.
Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre is a new state-of-the-art children’s theatre and performance space with Monkey Baa Theatre Company selected as the resident company. The venue houses the company’s office and also stages rehearsals and performances.
Jands completed the technical fit-out of the theatre as a turnkey project in partnership with The PA People. Rob Mitchell of RTM International was the theatre consultant engaged by Lend Lease.
The lighting equipment comprised of an ETC Ion 1000 console with radio focus remote and a remote playback unit for backup chosen for lighting control, a Pathport DMX over Ethernet distribution system, ETC Selador Vivid-R 11” LED luminaires, ETC Source Four Zooms, ETC Source Four Fresnels, Jands JLX-Lite lighting bars and Jands WMX dimmer racks.
The ETC Ion 1000 console selected for lighting control has been delivering impressive performance with Production and Operations Manager Toby Knyvett describing the Ion as a system that is definitely becoming the standard in Australian theatres. He points to the console’s compatibility with existing old and new equipment in regional theatres while its traditional theatre style of operation also offers greater control of moving lights and intelligent fixtures than the older generation of lighting consoles.
The Pathport DMX over Ethernet distribution system works alongside the Ion system in a great partnership. As both the console and the backup unit send DMX over Ethernet, even if one is lost, the takeover would be immediate with no external switches or swapping of DMX cables. The two Pathport VIA network switches also offer a level of network redundancy.

Lighting fixtures include 20 ETC Selador Vivid-R 11” LED luminaires that combine high-power Luxeon Rebel LEDs and high-efficiency lenses for a strong, cutting beam of light and maximum colour production. The low heat output and low power consumption of these fixtures are key benefits in any theatrical production.

Monkey Baa also took delivery of 26 ETC Source Four Zooms 15-30 degrees, 12 ETC Source Four Zooms 25-50 degrees and 26 ETC Source Four Fresnels, with all the fixtures using the same reliable HPL750 lamp.

Twenty-one segments of Jands JLX-Lite lighting bars and six of Jands’ WMX wall-mounted, 12-channel (2.4KVA) dimmer racks specifically designed for contracting and theatre applications were also installed.
Staging elements supplied by Jands included a drapes package, a cyclorama and rigging points in the ceiling.
The turnkey project also included installation of sound equipment comprising of a JBL VRX line array system for the PA, which consisted of two hangs of three VRX932LA boxes along with two VRX918SP powered subs. The system is driven by two Crown XTI 6002 power amplifiers while a Crown XTI 2002 amplifier powers the foldback of four JBL MRX512M 12” passive monitors. System processing is via BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100.
According to Toby, the VRX system delivers more than enough power for the 380-seat venue, which is not only very wide but also features a low flat ceiling above and big timber floor below.
Microphones include four each of Shure Beta 58 Vocal and Shure SM57 Instrument models. FOH mixing duties are handled by a Soundcraft LX7II console, which Toby says is ideal for theatre work. The analogue console allows them to create sub-mixes for spot speakers and captioning services whilst still having enough channels and outputs to accommodate day-to-day requirements. A Lexicon MX400XL reverb/effects processor provides the special effects for productions.
Jands’ Ezicom Master Station, a rack-mounted, single channel partyline system with four switchable zones allows the Stage Manager to separate communications to match crews to specific zones and talk to them separately or all at once. Six Ezicom single channel partyline belt packs along with a couple of Clear-Com dual channel Partyline squark boxes were also supplied.

The foyer space and dressing rooms are equipped with a JBL Contractor speaker system for making announcements.
