Jands  worked with the audiovisual contractors of a new world-class ice sports facility in Melbourne to design and install a complete audio system.

The Icehouse is Australia's new world-class ice sports and entertainment venue, and the only dual ice rink in Australia.

Situated in the heart of the Waterfront City precinct in Melbourne, the $58 million facility comprises of two Olympic-sized ice rinks, state-of-the-art sound and light system, stadium seating, specialist winter sports gym, café, bar and function rooms.

Massteknik (now known as Mediatec) was appointed as the audiovisual contractors to the project with Tim Mitchell, Business Development Manager for Massteknik as the project manager for the audiovisual design and installation.

Tim worked closely with John Dignam from Jands, designing and implementing the audio system for the entire venue.

Jands was selected because it could provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution.

Tim says that the decision to go with Jands meant that they could procure the entire scope of equipment in a single package including the JBL speakers, Crown amplifiers and BSS London family of products.

Highlights of the audio system installed by Jands at The Icehouse

  • Rink 1 main competition rink: 10 JBL AM6215 cabinets, five directed at the seating and five directed at the ice for the competitors, all powered by Crown CTS-2000 amplifiers
  • Rink 2: 8 JBL AM6215 cabinets powered by Crown CTS-2000 amplifiers with all the speakers rigged from the overhead lighting truss and directed to give full coverage of the ice
  • Function rooms, café and bar: 68 assorted JBL Control Series speakers for 100V line background audio powered by Crown CDi1000 amplifiers

The whole audio system is run from an impressive BSS Soundweb London set up. Each space has its own audio control panel in the form of a BSS BLU-3, which offers simple source selection and volume control.

The main audio control panel at the front ticketing counter is a BLU-8, which offers a more powerful and flexible source selection ability with useful features such as voice paging.

Three Shure ULX Series radio microphones were also supplied for the audio system.

Discussions are on for the addition of an audio system to the Gym and Ballet Room on level two.
