IronPlanet appoints new CEO

IronPlanet  has named Gregory J. Owens chairman and chief executive officer of the organisation, effective August 1. Owens will also join the IronPlanet's Board of Directors on that date.

Owens most recently served as managing director of Red Zone Capital, a Washington D.C. Private Equity Group. Prior to that, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Manugistics Group Inc, a leading public supply chain management software company.

"Greg is a veteran business leader, and his proven ability to lead top performing teams makes him the perfect choice to take the reins at IronPlanet," said Ted Schlein, who serves on the IronPlanet Board of Directors from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB).

"With Greg's strong financial and business leadership, IronPlanet will continue its expansion into new markets while delivering on IronPlanet's value proposition," said Arthur Patterson of Accel Partners, who also serves on the IronPlanet Board of Directors.

Owens joins IronPlanet with extensive experience and proven results in revenue growth and supply chain business management. He has served as global managing partner supply chain management at Accenture where he was a founding member of their supply chain group. Owens has served, or presently serves, on several outside Boards including Serena Software, Inc., S1 Corporation and SecureWorks, Inc.

"IronPlanet is a profitable, rapidly growing marketplace, and it is the established leader in the online used heavy equipment category," Owens said.

"This company is a game changer with tremendous growth opportunity in a space that is rapidly changing the way that buying and selling occurs in the capital equipment market."

IronPlanet has also recently announced that it is gearing up for an Australian launch in the last quarter of 2007. It will be the first new international territory for the US Company in its seven year history.

IronPlanet’s auctions attract registered bidders globally, including a significant number of Australians. The level of interest from Australia, and the high level of broadband uptake in the country were also motivating factors in the decision to launch here.

It is planned that the first Australian-based auction will take place in the last quarter of 2007.

IronPlanet is the world's leading online marketplace for used heavy equipment. IronPlanet is backed by Accel Partners, KPCB, Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo.

IronPlanet facilitates the sale of a broad range of heavy equipment and trucks by providing an easy-to-use interface and detailed, guaranteed inspection reports enabling customers to buy and sell with confidence.
