INTERWORLD Electronics has announced that Quatech's SSU-100 has now been added to the Sun MicroSystems USB hardware support list for the Sun Ray information appliance systems.
The Sun Ray is a simple, low cost device that requires no desktop administration. These appliances are centrally managed by, and draw their computing resources from, Sun's server line.
Quatech's SSU-100 is the only authorised single port serial USB device for the Sun Ray and is the key for applications requiring a serial connection such as synchronising a Palm unit with the Sun Ray, adding a serial printer or adding any other serial device.
No special software is needed from Quatech for this application. The Sun software support for the SSU-100 is found on the Sun software distribution package.
Quatech's SSU-100 provides a single RS232 serial interface to a PC via the USB port. The adapter supports serial transmission at all common legacy device bit rates, and is capable of data rates up to 115.2kbps.
To allow the continued use of existing application software designed for traditional serial adapters, the SSU-100 enumerates itself as a standard COM port. Also consistent identification is ensured with internal unique electronic serialisation.
As a result, users can continue employing their present serial devices, such as scanners, modems, barcode readers, touch-screens, ISDN terminal adapters, etc, while at the same time taking advantage of the benefits that USB provides. Interworld Electronics 03 9563 5011.
