TRENTON Technology has developed the SHB Express or PICMG 1.3 specification.
Available through Interworld Electronics , the PICMG 1.3 builds on the foundation of the PICMG 1.0 PCI/ISA specification and enables support for Advanced Switching, PCI Express, PCI-X, PCI and in some cases even ISA edge or slot card technologies in a computing system design.
Trenton's new PCI Express SHBs and backplanes enable the system designer to support multiple option cards with different bus architectures. This allows the designer to take advantage of the plethora of inexpensive PCI/PCI-X option cards as well as the new PCI Express cards.
The cards are installed in a passive backplane and controlled by a state-of-the-art PCI Express-based SHB. The net result is a system that offers high-speed SHB-to-backplane communications via PCI Express without having to discard the proven and cost-effective option cards of the past.
PICMG 1.3 SHBs and backplanes fall into two broad categories: Graphics Class and Server Class. A Graphics Class SHB has one x16 and either one x4 or four x1 PCI Express electrical connections to the backplane.
A typical Server Class SHB may have a combination of x8 and x4 links routed to the backplane. Graphics Class SHBs and backplanes should always be paired together. Likewise, Server Class SHBs should always be used with Server Class backplanes.
PICMG 1.3 SHBs include the NLT Series Server Class Dual Xeon board based on the Intel E7520 chipset and the T4L Series Graphics Class SHB supporting Intel dual core Pentium D processors.
The NLT Series supports x8 and x4 PCI Express links, 8GB of dual channel DDR2-400 memory, dual Serial ATA/150 ports and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. The T4L Series SHB's support x16, x4 and x1 PCI Express links, 4GB of dual channel DDR2-667 memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and Integrated RAID 0,1,5 and 10 implementation support via four SATA/300 ports. Both SHBs support 32-bit and 64-bit applications via Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology.
PICMG 1.3 Backplanes include the BPG6544 Graphics Class backplane with 1xPICMG 1.3 CPU slot, 1x16x PCI-Express, 1x8x PCI-Express, 1x Expansion slot, 1xPCI-X (64-bit 133MHz), 4xPCI-X (64-bit 66MHz), 2x32 PCI (32-bit 33MHz) and 2x ISA slots, and the BPX6571 Server Class backplane with 1xPICMG 1.3 CPU slot, 1x8x PCI-Express, 1x4x PCI-Express and 16xPCI-X (64-bit 66MHz) slots.
Trenton backplanes use PCI Express-to-PCI-X and PCI-to-ISA bridge technology. Bridge technology is cost effective, robust and reliable with minimal data latency delays.
