The Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Solar Boat Team has standardised on the SolidWorks Education Edition 3D CAD design software, subsequently adding on SolidWorks Simulation and SolidWorks Flow Simulation software to help prepare for international competitions.
Using SolidWorks Education Edition, SolidWorks Simulation and SolidWorks Flow Simulation software, the Istanbul Technical University Solar Boat Team has become one of the world’s most successful competitive student solar boat teams.
The ITU Solar Boat Team is one of the world’s most successful student teams, placing as a top three finalist every year that it has competed at the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) International SOLAR SPLASH, the world championship of intercollegiate solar/electric boating.
The team needed 3D design and simulation tools to refine design concepts, eliminate costly prototyping and facilitate communications.
After standardising on the SolidWorks Education Edition 3D CAD design software, the team added SolidWorks Simulation and SolidWorks Flow Simulation software. Key reasons for using SolidWorks solutions include ease of learning, availability of surfacing tools and the integrated simulation capabilities.
By choosing SolidWorks design and simulation software, the ITU Solar Boat Team was able to gain several benefits including shortening design cycles and reducing prototyping costs while winning several competition-related design awards along the way.
Key results from SolidWorks solutions:
- Shortened research and development cycle from 20 months to one month
- Cut prototyping costs by 66%
- Accelerated contributions of new team members
- Won multiple competition-related design awards
Collaboration, ease of use, data exchange, focus on design, ability to design better products, innovation, advanced modelling, product-level drawings, photorealistic renderings and integration are some of the gains for the ITU Solar Boat Team from SolidWorks solutions.
SolidWorks 3D CAD design software is also available in Australia and New Zealand from Intercad .
